Ports Urged To Work Together
Fri, Jun 1 2007
SNIPPET: Australia's ports need to work together to cope with a dramatic increase in maritime trade, according to the Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Regional Services, De-Anne Kelly. In a keynote address to the Regional Ports in Focus conference in Mackay today, Mrs Kelly said the real challenge facing ports, governments and port users was handling the strong growth in cargo volumes, non-container trade and ship visits. "International maritime trade has increased significantly over the past decade, increasing from 408 million tonnes in 1994/95 to 681 million tonnes in 2004/05 and substantial growth is forecast for the volumes of cargo moving through our ports during the next 20 years," Mrs Kelly said.
