Labor seeks excuse to axe road black spot funds
Tue, Jun 26 2007

SNIPPET: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Regional Service Mark Vaile today said he feared a report criticising the road-building ability of state governments and local councils would be used as an excuse by Labor, if it gained government, to axe the vital road safety Black Spot programme. Yet it was cut by Labor when last in government and the ALP's 2004 Election Policy was to cut Black Spot road safety funding. "Since the Black Spot programme was re-introduced by the Australian Government in 1996 it has funded more than 4,200 road safety projects carried out by state and local governments that by June 2008 will have saved at least 130 lives and prevented around 6,000 serious crashes.
