Thu, Jul 12 2007

SNIPPET: The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Regional Services, Mark Vaile, today asked the Office of Transport Security (OTS) to further investigate an incident at Sydney Airport to establish whether there were systemic deficiencies in the management of access to the secure areas of Sydney Airport by Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC) holders and visitors. "I have asked OTS to investigate the specific assertions that have been made with regard to security at Sydney Airport and whether there are deficiencies in aviation security as has been implied," Mr Vaile said. They are in privileged security positions and therefore have been subjected to significant national security background checking by the Australian Federal Police, state and territory police forces and national security agencies and, where relevant, the Immigration Department," Mr Vaile said.
