East-West link study welcomed!
Thu, Mar 1 2007

Dr Pieter Nagel , Director of Victoria University’s Institute of Logistics and Supply Chain Management has cautiously welcomed Premier Bracks announcement today of the Terms of Reference for the East-West Needs Assessment.

He said “While it is good to see plans to improve Melbourne’s major transport links it is essential that any solutions to its transport and logistics problems are approached holistically.”

“It is essential that we look closely at the issue of connectivity across the whole of Melbourne.”

“Certainly Melbourne’s east and west are important – however it would be perilous to the economy to ignore the rapid growth in both industry and housing located in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.”

“What we need are long term practical solutions for a rapidly growing city.”

He said “Vision will be needed so that the study does not become a narrowly focussed debate about a bridge, a road or where a tunnel might go , how much it will cost and whether or not it will be tolled?”
