Critical port-rail link funding “much needed” says VU’s Dr Nagel
Dr Pieter Nagel, Director of Victoria University’s Institute of Logistics and Supply Chain Management has welcomed the announcement in today’s State Budget, of $13 million to enable the construction of the Dynon Port Rail Link.
Dr Nagel said: “This is essential to improve rail access to the Port of Melbourne and will help to reduce traffic congestion on Footscray Road.”
“The Dynon Port Rail Link makes an important contribution in keeping the Port of Melbourne as Australia’s top container port, but there is a continuing urgency for a big picture view to be adopted. It is essential that we look closely at the issue of connectivity across the whole of Melbourne."
“Melbourne's west is ideally positioned to attract major global players in logistics – who can bring their expertise to help grow our economy and secure more jobs.”
“This is why the Institute of Logistics and Supply Chain Management’s recently developed concept for a National Logistics City for western Melbourne is so important.”
"The Institute's concept of a 'National Logistics City' based in Melbourne's west is geared to resolve issues such as traffic congestion at a strategic, functional and operational level."
"It must be recognised that the Port of Melbourne is a major economic driver, and to maintain that position it needs good transport and logistics infrastructure to support it. To ensure this it needs to needs to link to a 'National Logistics City' and the potential it offers."
