VU’s Pieter Nagel welcomes Federal Budget rail funding
Dr Pieter Nagel, Director of Victoria University’s Institute of Logistics and Supply Chain Management has welcomed the announcement in the Federal Budget, of $30 million in 2007-08 towards the Dynon Port Rail Link project.

Dr Nagel said: “The money will be used to elevate a section of Footscray Road over two new railway lines with enough clearance so that trains can operate between the Dynon intermodal precinct and the Port of Melbourne with double stacked containers.”

“The existing connection to the port is a single rail line with a level crossing at Footscray Road, which causes significant delays to road and rail users.”

“This is an essential infrastructure investment that improves rail access to the Port of Melbourne and will help to reduce traffic congestion on Footscray Road.”

“The Dynon Port Rail Link makes an important contribution in keeping the Port of Melbourne as Australia’s top container port, and it is essential that rail has ongoing investment to help connectivity.”

Dr Nagel has also praised investment announced in the Budget for the Tottenham to West Footscray rail link.

“The Government will provide $20 million in 2007-08 to start work on upgrading the Tottenham to West Footscray rail link, which services the Port of Melbourne.”

“The project will install duplicated standard gauge tracks, bi-directional signalling and cross over works, which will provide smoother and more efficient services for freight operators, and reduced noise and improved amenity for local residents.”

"It must be recognised that the Port of Melbourne is a major economic driver, and to maintain that position it needs good transport and logistics infrastructure to support it. It is not just important to Melbourne or Victoria it is a global player in logistics.”

“ILSCM has developed a proposal for the development of a National Logistics City in Melbourne’s west to support the Port of Melbourne and the continued development of sustainable economic development and employment outcomes for Victoria.”

"The Institute's proposal of a 'National Logistics City' suggests strategic mechanisms that will also assist in resolving long time ‘nuts and bolts’ issues such as traffic congestion at a day to day operational level.”

“Melbourne's west is ideally positioned to attract major global players in logistics – who can bring their expertise to help grow our economy and secure more jobs – Victoria can benefit greatly by adopting such a strategic approach to creating industry focused solutions for continued jobs growth in Melbourne and the regions.”
